The difference between a scrapbook album and a photo album is the way that you document the items that you put along with the photos. This information is known as journaling.
Albums that do not have journaling are a joy to look at, but years down the road will you be able to remember what the picture was about or who the people are in the picture. When doing scrapbooking include at least a why, what, when, where, who or how so that you and future generations to come will be able to enjoy these scrapbooking photos and know what they were about.
You might not like your own handwriting but there are lots of scrapbook
supplies to choose from. You can journal by hand, or with die cut letters, or
use alphabet stickers or you can use your computer. Journaling doesn’t have to
be long sentences. You can put just a title page (which doesn’t have to be at
the top of your page) or you can give your picture a caption but if you enjoy
writing and a little caption doesn’t work feel free to write a
paragraph.

There are also scrap booking idea books that have different styles of writing in them that you could experiment with. If you choose to use your computer for journaling there is a wide variety of fonts and colors to choose from. Just remember when purchasing scrapbooking supplies make sure that you use acid-free paper so that your photos will be safe.
You can make your journaling into fun shapes; it does not have to be straight on the scrapbook page. You can cut different shapes out of lined paper or patterned background paper or solid paper, and then mount it next to your picture. You can also draw a very light line with a pencil (using a stencil) in the shape of a heart, or balloon. Then journal inside the shape. When the ink dries erase the pencil lines and the shape remains. Use colored pens that either contrast or compliment your photos. If you put your thoughts down on paper your scrapbook will be enjoyed for years to come.
When journaling always keep in mind that whatever scrap book supplies you choose will enhance your scrapbook pages and give character to your scrapbooking album.
